Finnish-born ceramicist Maija Grotell served as the head of the Ceramics Department at the Cranbrook Academy of Art from 1938 to 1966. Here, she works on the base of a fountain with student Nelly Beveridge. Beveridge played many roles on campus, serving as a companion and nurse to George and Ellen Booth in their later years even as she completed her studies at the Academy.

I’m going to suggest using the free Picasa (from Google) and using the autofix tool to doctor such a digital image up before posting. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the result. Of course, you will save the touched-up version under a different file name so as to preserve the original digitized image.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your suggestion! We use Photoshop to edit our photos, but in general we choose not to do so unless there is damage, scratches, or marks that might otherwise make the photo illiegible. Our thinking is that as a historical blog, we have a unique opportunity to present the images as they would have been made and seen by the people who originally interacted with them. Of course, we also want to make sure that the image is totally understandable to modern eyes, and we’ll definitely keep your suggestion in mind as we go forward.
